IPL 2022: MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retained, Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan will enter the mega auction
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, Kane Williamson and Glenn Maxwell are among the big names that the current franchise have decided to retain for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, while Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan will be involved in the mega auction this time. Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan has turned down an offer from Sunrisers Hyderabad in which he was being retained. Hyderabad has now retained Kane Williamson as well as young J&K players Umran Malik and Abdul Samad. This means that Williamson can now be the permanent captain of Sunrisers.
Mumbai Indians retained Kieron Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav. Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma were already retained by MI. This means that Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan will be involved in the auction this time. Royal Challengers Bangalore have also decided to retain three players. The team had already retained Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell with them and now fast bowler Mohammad Siraj will also be with RCB. If this happens, Yuzvendra Chahal and Devdutt Padikkal will be included in the IPL auction. Rajasthan Royals had announced to keep Sanju Samson with them and now Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal will also stay with Rajasthan.
The list of retained players and the purses remaining with the teams are as follows:
- Chennai Super Kings: Ravindra Jadeja, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rituraj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali.
- Sunrisers Hyderabad: Kane Williamson, Umran Malik, Abdul Samad.
- Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard.
- Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammad Siraj.
- Kolkata Knight Riders: Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer.
- Delhi Capitals: Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel, Anrich Nortje.
- Rajasthan Royals: Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal.
- Punjab Kings: Mayank Agarwal, Arshdeep Singh.
The new franchises have time from December 1 to December 25 to sign three players (two Indian and one foreign) who have not been retained by the existing eight existing franchises. The new franchise can include them in their team. The eight existing IPL teams will be able to retain a maximum of four players. Teams with two different combinations can apply for retention. The combination includes three Indians and one foreigner or two Indians and two foreigners. It doesn't matter whether Indian players are capped or uncapped.
There will be no right-to-match cards in the auction. Each player will have the right to decide whether he wants to stay with that franchise or not. Recently the IPL increased the auction purse to Rs 90 crore, with various retention slabs set as well. The existing franchises can retain a maximum of four players, while the two new unnamed franchises - Lucknow and Ahmedabad - can buy three players each from the player pool after retaining the original eight teams.
